Below is a great post from Pat O'Brien on his blog www.patobriengolf.com
Great playing Zach and to his entire team!!!
It is shaping up to be quite a nice year for my friend. As always, his success is a team effort. Mike Bender has him hitting the ball so well, Morris Pickens has really helped Zach elevate his mental game. Damon Green keeps him cool on the course, and is one of the best Bermuda green readers alive! Chris Noss keeps him in shape, and I keep him rolling it well. In the end, Zach puts it all together and executes among the best in the game. I am truly privileged to be a part of it all.
We switched his putter to a 303 Stainless Steel cast SeeMore FGP model at The Players Championship. It sits a few degrees flatter and it is easier for him to see his line. Because of this, he is fully committed to his target with no doubts in his mind. His hands are now barely behind the ball, just like in 03 and 04. I told him at The Players that it is ok to be like this and to not worry about it anymore. I think shooting 60 is evidence that he has heeded the advice! This is now the second 60 he has shot in the last 20 months on Tour. I don't think many, if any, players can lay that claim.
Zach's pre shot routine never changes. As I may have mentioned in a previous blog, we came up with it at The Nelson in 2004. He looks down for his first practice stroke, at the target for his next, walks into the ball, places his putter behind the ball and then looks twice and lets it go. He does not waste time, and that fits his personality. One of my mottos is that the best strokes are the ones you don't remember. Zach is great at this. I am planning a future post on pre shot routines with some video mixed in. Look for it soon!
Spring is one of my busiest times and I have not been able to devote the energy to this blog as I would have liked. I plan on discussing putting yips, putting games to play and some video of a good chipping drill. I also have a personal story in remembrance of The 1999 US Open and the story of Ted Purdy's perseverance. Please feel free to email me if you have topics you would like covered. It always makes my day to hear from people all over the world.
