2010 Rice Planters Amateur - Mt. Pleasant, SC (Snee Farm Country Club)

The summer amateur golf season has begun for top college golfers.  This past Monday and Tuesday, SeeMore Putter Company had the pleasure of attending the 2010 Rice Planters Amateur at Snee Farm Country Club practice rounds.  Located just outside Charleston, SC.  

The Rice Planters Amateur was the inspiration of Dick Horne in 1973, being contested at Snee Farm Country Club since its inception.  Throughout the years, an illustrious group of golfers have made the Rice Planters Amateur part of their rite of passage.  Tom Lehman, Davis Love III, Andy Bean, Mark O'Meara, Hal Sutton, Stewart Cink and Scott Verplank have all competed at this prestigious world ranked amateur golf tournament.  The 2010 will be the 38th Rice Planters Amateur.

We would like to thank Bruce Fleming, Tournament Director, and his staff for having us attend.  The ability to showcase our putters to some of the top amateurs in the world helps broaden the SeeMore story.

Understanding Alignment in Putting

This is the third article in a series on putting.  This month’s topic covers how to aim your putter properly.  It is very difficult to have a quiet mind and putt with confidence if that little voice in your head is questioning your alignment.  I want to present to you a clear cut way to know where you are aiming, so you can make a free stroke.

There has been much discussion about eye dominance in putting and how it relates to aim.  It has been my experience that there simply is not a direct correlation between the two.  I have seen right eye dominant people misalign both to the left and right, as well as left eye dominant people.  It may make for an interesting topic of conversation, but it does not factor into my teaching.  What I focus on is eyeline and how to look at your target properly.

In this first picture, I want you to notice how unbalanced my body looks. 

There is more weight on my right leg, my shoulders are tilted too much and my nose is behind my sternum.  In this position, my eyeline is pointed to the right of my intended target line. 

 

In these next two pictures, notice how symmetrical my body looks.  My weight is evenly balanced and my spine is level, not tilted to the right.  Because of this, my nose is right over my sternum. 

My eyeline is now parallel to my aiming line, as well as my body lines.

When Zach Johnson won the Colonial Invitational a few weeks ago, he yet again turned the spotlight on the SeeMore Putter Company and its RifleScope alignment system.

Indeed, wielding his trusty SeeMore FGP putter, Johnson needed just 26 putts in the final round to set the tournament record with a score of 21 under par.

But while Johnson has been printing money with one of the original SeeMore putters, the company has been busy expanding its mSeries and other lines, including the recent release of the SeeMore m7 putter ($325).

Does the m7 earn its rather lofty asking price? Following is PutterZone.com's SeeMore m7 putter review.

The Storyline 
The m7 belongs to SeeMore’s mSeries line, which was launched a little over three years ago with the m1, m2 and m3 putters, as well as the mFGP. 

At the time, the mSeries heralded a new era for SeeMore. Under inspired new ownership, the venerable brand—which had fallen on hard times—roared back with a fresh commitment to quality, as evident in the milled mSeries putters. 

Rather than simply try to blow a little wind in the sails of the SeeMore brand, the new owners, Jim Grundberg and Jason Pouliot, re-imagined and retooled SeeMore as a leader in the premium putter category. 

Shortly thereafter, Zach Johnson won the Masters with his SeeMore FGP putter, and the new SeeMore Putter Company was more than ready for the ensuing attention. The brand hadn’t seen that much buzz since Payne Stewart won the U.S. Open with his own SeeMore FGP eight years earlier. 

The mSeries putters are 100-percent milled in the U.S.A. The SeeMore m7 putter is milled from stainless steel, and it is the first mSeries putter to feature a softer milled aluminum face insert. A second aluminum insert in the rear cavity is designed to enhance the feel and enlarge the sweet spot. The m7 is joined by the m6, m8 and m9 as new entries in the mSeries. 

As with all SeeMore putters, the m7 features the company’s signature RifleScope alignment system. A red dot on the rear crown of the putter is visually hidden by a blackened lower shaft when proper setup is achieved. Two parallel white lines frame the shaft to provide a further indication that the golfer is in position to make a consistent and reliable stroke. 

When queried about the m7, Grundberg said, “The m7 is a tour-inspired option, keeping the best-selling m1 in mind. Having a cutaway heel and a soft aluminum insert allows for less rebound. Some players wanted a blend of the m1 and m2 along with slightly less rebound and softer feel. It simply extends and enhances the variety of offerings in the flagship mSeries, taking the best from both of those heads and combining them to make the m7.” 

The m7 weighs 335 grams. It can be ordered from SeeMore in a wide variety of custom lengths and lie angles. It also comes with two shaft options—a straight shaft, and the offset “whistle” shaft. You also get your choice of one of seven head covers, and numerous grip options. The putter is almost fully toe down with the straight shaft, with a little less hang on the offset version.

The m7’s general resemblance to SeeMore’s m1 was obvious right out of the box. The first thing I did was grab the m1 from the PutterZone.com vault and line the two putters up. Only then did the subtle enhancements stand out—the slightly smaller head, the cutaway on the heel, the softer bevels.

Zach's Grip

By now, you have heard from most commentators about Zach's grip and how he angles the shaft slightly behind the ball at address.  I want to thank Ian Baker Finch, Nick Faldo and Jim Nantz from CBS for taking the time to talk to me about it.  I appreciate that it is unusual, and I will explain why.

This is a picture I took of Zach's grip Wednesday of Colonial.  Little did I know that I would be commenting on it again by Sunday!  I took it because he made a small adjustment on his off week, where he placed a little sliver of his left heel pad on top of the grip.  This gave him a "locked in" feeling, without tension of course, and I wanted to document it for future reference.

 

My left heel pad is more on top, and my right heel pad covers more of my left hand fingers.  I believe you have better leverage with the left hand this way, and the left wrist is less likely to break down through impact.  The right hand is less likely to dominate as well.  For more, go to earlier post on the grip and have a look at my DVD.

The main similarity between the two is that both of us have our forearms square to our target line.  Zach turns his right hand more under to achieve this, and it matches the feeling he has in his strong full swing grip.

ZACH IS BACK

Congratulations to my long time friend Zach for his victory at historic Colonial.  It is so cool to have his name up on that Wall of Champions, and also cool that he is only one of eleven people to ever win both the Masters and Colonial.  It is a pretty impressive list to join!

It was obviously great to be there and witness Zach in action.  When I spoke to him before the round on the putting green, I could tell he was calm and ready to go.  When he hit a nerveless flop shot from 30 yards out of the rough on the first hole to about 6 feet, I knew that he would be in the mix.

All week, we talked about being calm and to start allowing things to happen, especially on the greens.  He has been guilty all year of trying to make putts.  There has been nothing wrong with his technique; he just wants to make the Ryder Cup team so much and he also knows that he is hitting well enough to contend often.  So, even at that level, guys get too results oriented and don't let the game come to them. 

He has received the same message from everyone on his team- Mike Bender, his swing coach, and Morris Pickens, his mental coach.  As I have said before, I feel very blessed to be part of such a great team, with Damon Green, his caddy, and Chris Noss, his strength coach.  We are all on the same page with our message, and no one is more important than the other.  It is very refreshing.

Remember, there is no try in golf.  Try equals tension.  There is only allow.  The calmest guy is the one who usually wins on Sunday.  You could see that in Zach.  That man has no fear, and he absolutely wants the ball at the end of the game, so to speak.  When you get under pressure, be aware of the tension and anxiety that you are carrying and let it go.  Don't think about being calm, FEEL it.  The flag says it best-
