Calling someone the best ever in their sport is usually a sure-fire way to open the door to debate. But ask who is the greatest golfer the state of Iowa has ever produced, and that discussion turns one-sided in a hurry.
“Well, I think that’s a pretty easy answer,” Lonnie Nielsen said.
Cedar Rapids native Zach Johnson will compete in his third Ryder Cup starting Friday at Medinah Country Club outside Chicago. The Drake graduate has won nine times on the PGA Tour, four more than the rest of the state combined. He’s won a major championship, the 2007 Masters. Only Jack Fleck of Bettendorf, who beat Ben Hogan in a playoff to win the 1955 U.S. Open, also has a major on his resume.
“Zach is playing awfully well,” said Fleck, 90. “He’s won more tournaments than I did.”
